Life doesn’t always go as planned. Whether it’s in business or personal life, unexpected changes can throw us off balance and challenge our expectations. In the window cleaning and property maintenance industry, surprises are just part of the job. From sudden weather changes to last-minute client requests, learning how to manage stress in the face of unpredictability is key to staying focused and professional.
The Reality of Unexpected Changes
In my line of work, no two days are exactly the same. A perfectly scheduled day can be disrupted by rain, strong winds, or unexpected access issues at a client’s property. Equipment can malfunction, traffic can delay arrival times, and sometimes, a job ends up being much bigger than anticipated. In these moments, stress can build quickly if there’s no plan to handle the unexpected.
Managing Expectations – Both Ours and Others’
One of the biggest sources of stress in any business is the gap between expectations and reality. Clients expect their windows to be cleaned on schedule, and I expect every job to go smoothly. But when things don’t align, frustration can arise on both sides. Over the years, I’ve learned that clear communication is essential to managing expectations.
If bad weather prevents a scheduled cleaning, I immediately reach out to reschedule and explain why. If a job is more complex than expected, I communicate openly with the client about what’s needed. Being upfront and adaptable helps turn potential stress into a manageable situation, fostering trust and professionalism.
Strategies for Handling Unexpected Challenges
Here are a few ways I’ve learned to handle the unpredictability of running Jonny Windows:
Stay Flexible – Being rigid with plans can increase stress. I’ve learned to adjust my mindset and see changes as opportunities rather than obstacles.
Communicate Early and Often – Whether it’s letting clients know about delays or setting realistic expectations from the start, keeping the lines of communication open reduces misunderstandings.
Plan for the Unplanned – Having backup equipment, flexible scheduling options, and alternative work tasks for rainy days helps me stay productive even when things don’t go as planned.
Keep a Calm Mindset – Stress is often amplified by the way we react. I remind myself to take a deep breath, assess the situation, and make the best decision possible in the moment.
Applying These Lessons Beyond Business
These same principles apply to life outside of work. We all face unexpected challenges - whether it’s a canceled plan, a job opportunity falling through, or an unforeseen expense. The key is in how we respond. Staying adaptable, managing our expectations, and approaching obstacles with a problem-solving mindset can make all the difference.
